&lt;p&gt;Yet for all of the many great ideas and new directions that we will be proposing for the near future, there was one overriding theme.  &lt;strong&gt;How do we help our franchisees &amp;#8216;find the money?&amp;#8217;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We will have a renewed and strengthened focus, as a Franchise Support team, on ensuring that all of our franchisees know what they must do in order to get to &lt;span&gt;their own&lt;/span&gt; desired profitability.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We want you - our franchisees - to understand what your targets need to be in order to realise your financial and lifestyle goals.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We want to know what those goals are so that we can actively and constructively help you achieve it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We want you to be able to analyse your business and identify your performance gap, but more importantly, work out how to close it.  And execute those plans.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We want you to be able to identify the areas of your business that you can change, and to do something about it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We want you to be able to assess where your business is coming from and why.  We want you to challenge your existing lead generation activities so that you can get more of it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We want you to be able to benchmark yourself against other stores by collecting data in the same way.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In short, we want you to KNOW YOUR BUSINESS.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I have to thank a small group of SIGNARAMA franchisees in Sydney, led by Tony Murray from our Artarmon store, in helping to put together a model and program that will allow us to do this.  The model is almost complete, and our Field Reps will be showing it to you all over the coming months.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Be prepared to get down and dirty with numbers.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We want you to make lots of money.  We&amp;#8217;re in this thing together, it&amp;#8217;s the franchise partnership.  I believe our most profitable days are ahead of us.  Let me know how I can help.&lt;/p&gt;</description><link>http://evanfoster.tumblr.com/post/1175782703</link><guid>http://evanfoster.tumblr.com/post/1175782703</guid><pubDate>Fri, 24 Sep 2010 08:20:16 +0800</pubDate></item><item><title>Call Me Crazy, But.....</title><description>&lt;p&gt;OK so this one is a bit of a light-hearted diversion from my usual ramblings.  But in the last few weeks I have found myself spending more time than is normal for a 35 year old man watching Dora the Explorer.  Usually (but not exclusively) with my eldest daughter next to me.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It got me wondering: are Dora the Explorer&amp;#8217;s parents actually a highly organised and extremely well financed Mexican drug cartel?  Was I actually watching Underbelly 4 right before my eyes (only with much less - thank goodness - T&amp;amp;A).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Think about it.  Dora&amp;#8217;s parents &lt;em&gt;never&lt;/em&gt; seem to work, yet they&amp;#8217;re always giving her presents.  I can think of a puppy, a slide and a present for her puppy in just the 10 or so episodes that I watch.  Who&amp;#8217;s doing all the shopping?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Also, consider this.  Whenever you want to get to Dora&amp;#8217;s house, you have to go:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Through the jungle;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Across the river; and&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Over the tallest mountain.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;The joint is secluded and tough for even an intrepid 7 year old explorer to find without help.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And since you mentioned the help, Sir,  Dora&amp;#8217;s &amp;#8220;friends&amp;#8221; (or shall we call them her parents &amp;#8220;associates&amp;#8221;) seem to be very well equipped to get her out of trouble.  Whenever she needs to get across aforementioned river, Tico the Squirrel is always on hand to ferry her from danger in his speedboat.  And Isa the Iguana has all manner of transportation available, and is always on call whenever Dora needs a ride.  Who&amp;#8217;s funding the purchase of all of these toys?  You can be sure they weren&amp;#8217;t just beneficiaries of KRudd&amp;#8217;s stimulus spending.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But what about the Police?  If Dora&amp;#8217;s parents and friends are all involved in illegal narcotic trafficking, then why don&amp;#8217;t we see more of the efforts of the Policia Mexicana?  Well we do, but they just call him Swiper the Fox.  See - it&amp;#8217;s all making more sense now isn&amp;#8217;t it?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Poor Swiper - demonised by the cartel when all he is trying to do is to curtail the activities of el Familia de los exploradores.  Sometimes he wins, but even when he has a victory, someone else always pops up in their place.  &lt;em&gt;Swiper no swiping&lt;/em&gt; indeed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#8217;ll go back to fight the good fight, and in the meantime, I hope I&amp;#8217;ve forever changed the way you look at your kids&amp;#8217; favourite cartoon.  I know it&amp;#8217;s made the sub-dialogue in my head a hell of a lot more interesting.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Much has been written (by people much smarter than me) about the lack of conviction being shown by the 2 major political parties.  Flip-flopping, mind-changing, &amp;#8216;real&amp;#8217; and &amp;#8216;not real PM&amp;#8217;s.&amp;#8217;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It got me thinking back to a quote that a old boss of me used to say: &amp;#8220;if you don&amp;#8217;t stand for something, you&amp;#8217;ll fall for anything.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What exactly is it that YOU stand for?  What are the things that people know about you to be completely irrefutable?  Is it that Saturday mornings are family time, no matter what?  You don&amp;#8217;t drop your prices just because you&amp;#8217;re asked to?  Or you&amp;#8217;ll support your footy club regardless of where they sit on the ladder?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Whatever it is for you, any time that you change your mind, flip-flop or get talked into something else, you damage your personal brand.  People (aka clients and prospects) feel reassured by knowing what someone stands for.  It&amp;#8217;s how Apple is able to charge what it does for it&amp;#8217;s products - because people know that they are buying creativity, innovation and top-quality products.  You don&amp;#8217;t need to succeed in a race to the bottom to stand for something.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Yet recently I have been finding myself stuck in endless meetings, or on endless phone calls, with someone new trying to sell me something different (and often after I have initiated the contact), who doesn&amp;#8217;t bother to stop and ask me questions about what I&amp;#8217;m looking for.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Promotional products expert David Blaise talks about &amp;#8220;avoiding the data dump.&amp;#8221;  You know, not talking incessantly about everything that you do to the point where the customer is bored and not paying attention anymore.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Instead, ask the best questions.  Be interested in how you can help the customer, not on what you can sell them.  Find out what their pressure points are, not tell them what your pressure points are.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It&amp;#8217;s a simple thing to do, but so many people that I see get it so wrong.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Try this - work on a &amp;#8216;bank&amp;#8217; of 10-12 questions that you can use in any sales call to help establish rapport, show genuine interest and help determine the need of the potential customer in front of you.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;After all, that&amp;#8217;s how you differentiate yourself from the guy working out of his garage.&lt;/p&gt;</description><link>http://evanfoster.tumblr.com/post/643331086</link><guid>http://evanfoster.tumblr.com/post/643331086</guid><pubDate>Sat, 29 May 2010 17:54:45 +0800</pubDate></item><item><title>What DO You Know, What DON'T You Know?</title><description>&lt;p&gt;I was doing some analysis with one of my stores recently and showed him a chart of how his store&amp;#8217;s sales have progressed over the almost 5 years that he has been in business.  He looked at the chart and was amazed that his sales had been charted in such a way for all that time.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It got me thinking: how many franchisees would be able to provide something similar if I walked into their store today?  If I rattled off questions about specific KPI data, would you be able to tell me within +/- 10%?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;They always say that &amp;#8220;you can&amp;#8217;t manage what you don&amp;#8217;t measure,&amp;#8221; but an old boss of mine used to put it in another, more succinct way: KNOW-YOUR-BUSINESS.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So what sort of KPI&amp;#8217;s should you know if I came in and asked you today.  These are SOME of them:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Current Value of Work in Progress;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Current Accounts Receivables;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;This month&amp;#8217;s NEW sales target;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Current NEW sales this month;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Current INVOICED sales this month;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Average Invoice Value&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;What system do you have in place to measure any or all of these?  How often are you looking at these reports?  Do you even know WHERE to find these reports?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Finding this stuff out should take you 2 minutes every morning and should become habit-forming.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Our Field Reps (myself included) are going to start asking these questions on every visit we do and if you don&amp;#8217;t know the answers, then we&amp;#8217;re going to go find out.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Channel 10 have taken last year&amp;#8217;s concept of &amp;#8216;The Alliance&amp;#8217; and really run with it in 2010, making it a cornerstone of the program.  It got me to thinking - in business, who is in YOUR &amp;#8216;Alliance?&amp;#8217;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The olf franchise saying goes &amp;#8216;you&amp;#8217;re in business for yourself, but not BY yourself.&amp;#8217;  And that&amp;#8217;s true, but when all of us have our heads in our little holes getting our work done, we often don&amp;#8217;t lean on one another like we should.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I had a great example just the other day of what can happen when the Alliance is built and then cultivated.  On the same day, I had 2 of my stores call me and say that production was getting behind because the volume of work that they had on was getting too much for their staff.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We got in touch with another one of our most successful stores who - presto! - happened to have some spare capacity and lent some production staff to both stores to get them out of a tight spot.  Simple alliances, built up with trust over time for everyone to benefit.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Within United Franchise Group we have an even bigger opportunity to build alliances - with our branding and event management expertise, we can become a business&amp;#8217; marketing and branding partner.  For years we&amp;#8217;ve called this &amp;#8216;Starpoint Services&amp;#8217; but we&amp;#8217;ve never driven it hard enough.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Until now.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Next month on March 10th we are holding our first ever UFG Brand Alliance meeting in WA.  Franchisees from ALL brands will be attending - SIGN*A*RAMA, EmbroidMe and Plan Ahead Events.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Ray Titus reminded me that while we now have email, Facebook, forums, videos, wesbites and the like, some irrefutable things about sales never change.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;People buy from other people that they know and like.  And while social networking sites make it a little easier for people to get to know your like and dislikes, what you do with your weekends and where you stand on Brangelina splitting up (for example), they don&amp;#8217;t get to know &lt;b&gt;the real you.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I read recently that 93% of all communication is non-verbal.  Body language, facial expressions, pauses in speech.  How do you communicate all of these things via email?  Or how can you read your customer&amp;#8217;s non-verbal communication via the same mediums?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is as important now as it ever was to get face-to-face with people.  Networking events, delivering estimates, direct marketing, will all assist in building relationships and getting prospects to know and like you.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We&amp;#8217;ve got plenty of examples from within our franchise of people who do exactly that.  Speak with Elizabeth or Graeme at EmbroidMe Claremont to find out how they create their brand advocates, or ask Rhod Webb at SIGNARAMA City North how he stays in touch with his valued customers on a regular basis.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There was a time in marketing when manufacturers would make something, then work out how to sell it to the market.  Over time that evolved into focus groups and market research - so that newer manufacturers would actually pay to find out what customers wanted, make it, then market it.  Makes more sense, right?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;However as technology moves at an ever-increasing speed, we have almost come full circle.  No longer can we expect our customers to understand or comprehend the sheer array of product opportunities that are out there.  This despite today&amp;#8217;s consumer being the most educated and knowledgeable that the world has ever seen.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What&amp;#8217;s my point?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There have been so many innovations in the signage and promotional apparel industries in the last few years that customers simply don&amp;#8217;t know much about.  You don&amp;#8217;t expect a customer to walk into your SIGNARAMA showroom asking for advertising on the front of steps, do you?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You need to be proactive when it comes to identifying and marketing to those niche segments that you know would benefit from these new products and services.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Some examples:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;EmbroidMe - go through the Yellow Pages/online/local Sport &amp;amp; Rec Centre to find all of the cycling clubs in your area.  Develop a telemarketing approach to contact them and find out who makes the purchasing decisions for their track gear, and when.  Then you can offer the &lt;u&gt;new&lt;/u&gt; sublimation cycling jerseys.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;SIGNARAMA - think of 10 of your existing customers that buy the same products from you on a regular basis.  Or target 10 new customers that you know buy loads of the same types of products.  Then introduce our new Company Stores option through ShopSIGNARAMA.  No-one else in Australia can do this for them.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;EmbroidMe - actively target 10 customers in your area that you know use promotional T-shirts (cafe&amp;#8217;s, health food stores, restaurants) and present the decision-maker with a garment printed t-shirt with their logo and a catchy title on it (and your EME logo as well).  How many people know they can get a digital image onto a minimum of 1 shirt?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;SIGNARAMA - grab 5 VIP clients from your database who would benefit from a digital signage solution.  Clubs, Law Courts, Restaurants, Car Dealerships, Real Estate.  Get them thinking outside the square and show that you are different from the sign shop down the road.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Don&amp;#8217;t wait for customers to come to you asking for faster horses.  Identify what their needs might be and sell them Model-T&amp;#8217;s instead.&lt;/p&gt;</description><link>http://evanfoster.tumblr.com/post/338297401</link><guid>http://evanfoster.tumblr.com/post/338297401</guid><pubDate>Sun, 17 Jan 2010 10:01:58 +0800</pubDate></item><item><title>Are You Marketing Your Hardest?</title><description>&lt;p&gt;It seems everyone is (rightly) more confident going into 2010 than they were at the corresponding point 12 months ago.  We&amp;#8217;re all excited that this year is going to be our biggest year ever.  If the last quarter of 2009 is anything to go by, then things are looking very good.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But success doesn&amp;#8217;t come automatically, and we can&amp;#8217;t all assume that the economic wave is going to pick up our businesses and take us along for the ride.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I am continuously reminded of a saying that Craig Mason keeps telling me - &amp;#8220;when the economy is best, market hardest.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Those businesses that struggled and even failed to survive 2009 were (probably) guilty of taking the good times for granted.  They lived off the excesses of others and when times got tough, didn&amp;#8217;t know where their customers had gone or more importantly - how to get them back.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So as 2010 gets underway, what plans do you have to &amp;#8220;market hardest&amp;#8221; over the next 12 months?  Have you written your marketing plan to incorporate any or all of the following:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Telemarketing - the most often ignored, but extremely effective.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Email marketing - continuous &amp;#8216;touches&amp;#8217; with your clientele.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Social networking - using this tool to develop deeper relationships with your network.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Direct mail - announcements, brand awareness, promotions.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Your customer&amp;#8217;s calendar - what important events do THEY have throughout the year and at what time?  How can you help THEM when these events happen?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Trade Shows - what events do you want to be seen at?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;There are dozens more I could go on with.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;My point is - don&amp;#8217;t let 2010 just happen to you.  You have to continue to make things happen.  More opportunities than ever before are going to be out there.  Are you hungry enough to grab them before someone else does?&lt;/p&gt;</description><link>http://evanfoster.tumblr.com/post/319546570</link><guid>http://evanfoster.tumblr.com/post/319546570</guid><pubDate>Wed, 06 Jan 2010 17:24:31 +0800</pubDate></item><item><title>Here's Some of My Goals for 2010 - What Are Yours?</title><description>&lt;p&gt;Firstly, Happy New Year to everyone reading this.  I hope you all had a great break (some of you might still be on it!) and took advantage of some time away from work to refresh and gear up for this year.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Anyone that&amp;#8217;s been to UFG&amp;#8217;s Training School (sorry, the Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence!) will know that we&amp;#8217;re a company that is very strong on goals.  I&amp;#8217;m not talking South Africa 2010 (although I&amp;#8217;m in countdown mode for that too - Spain is my tip, you read it here first), but rather setting your goals for yourself, your business and your life.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We talk to our franchisees constantly about setting goals, having monthly sales targets etc etc.  And of course these are extremely important, but we know (yes, we KNOW!) that many of our franchisees don&amp;#8217;t go through this process.  And it&amp;#8217;s usually easy to spot who those ones are.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So why don&amp;#8217;t some people take the time to sit down once a year (minimum) and write down their goals?  The reasons are many but the biggest one is - fear of failure.  People don&amp;#8217;t like getting to the end of the day/week/month/year not having achieved their goal.  They don&amp;#8217;t want to be held &lt;b&gt;accountable&lt;/b&gt; for their goals.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Ray and Jim always talk about writing your goals down, but just as importantly, placing them somewhere so that other people can see them.  Share them with others.  Not only can they help you achieve them, but they can help spur you on and keep you - what was that word? - accountable.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So to encourage you to get stuck into this process (if you haven&amp;#8217;t already), I&amp;#8217;m going to share with you &lt;b&gt;some&lt;/b&gt; of my goals for 2010 that I have been working on over my holiday break.  You can&amp;#8217;t say I&amp;#8217;m not holding myself accountable!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;SIGNARAMA Royalties to increase by 7% over 2009;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;EmbroidMe Royalties to increase by 10% over 2009;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;At least 50% of all SIGNARAMA and EmbroidMe stores have an Outside Sales Rep by the end of 2010;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;At least 70 SIGNARAMA stores signed up to the Inter-Franchise Work Standards by the end of 2010;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Launch SIGNARAMA Australia Sign Awards by March 1st, awarded in October&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Launch EmbroidMe Australia Product Awards by March 1st, awarded in October&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;To present the highest-rated presentation(s) of Australasian EXPO 2010 (yes, even higher than Ray or Jim)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Have the new EmbroidMe Australia Corporate website launched by March 1st&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Have the SIGNARAMA Australia Ad Fund landing page live by February 1st&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Create a complete Australian Discovery Day package (videos, tours, presentations) by July 1st, 2010.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;And on the personal front:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Buy a new car by October 1st;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Have another beautiful child (fingers crossed);&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Read 20 books throughout the year (I&amp;#8217;ve crossed off 2 already);&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Get into some sort of decent physical condition (i.e. be able to run 12kms consistently by next summer).&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;And I bet you thought all I did over the break was lie on the beach and eat great food.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Welcome to summer in Australia.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Most, if not all of our UFG franchisees will be taking a well-deserved break for at least the next 10 days, some not returning until January 11th.  What are you doing to &amp;#8216;sharpen the saw&amp;#8217; (i.e. improve your skills) over this period?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I thought I&amp;#8217;d share with you some of the books that I&amp;#8217;ve read this year - it&amp;#8217;s not too late to ask for one of these to be slipped into your XMAS stocking!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Good to Great, Jim Collins&lt;/b&gt; - what are the common characteristics of those companies that went from being just &amp;#8216;good&amp;#8217; to being businesses of lasting greatness?  Whether you are the manager of a staff of 3 or 3,000, this book resonates.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Tribes, Seth Godin&lt;/b&gt; - a different view on leadership in the 21st Century.  No longer is leadership the domain of the wealthy or the powerful.  Leadership belongs to the passionate and the willing.  A great read, one of my favourites.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey, Ken Blanchard&lt;/b&gt; - feel like you&amp;#8217;ve got an ever-growing &amp;#8216;to do&amp;#8217; list that should be handled by your staff?  Blanchard navigates through the management of &amp;#8216;the monkey&amp;#8217; aka the &amp;#8216;next move&amp;#8217; so that you can free up your time to build your business.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey&lt;/b&gt; - you&amp;#8217;ve probably heard Jim Tatem use terms like &amp;#8216;sharpen the saw,&amp;#8217; &amp;#8216;begin with the end in mind&amp;#8217; and &amp;#8216;first things first&amp;#8217; - they all come from here.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Eat That Frog, Brian Tracy&lt;/b&gt; - another Tatem favourite.  If the worst thing you had to do all day was eat a frog, wouldn&amp;#8217;t you be best to just do it and get it out of the way?  Stop procrastinating.  OK, I admit - I&amp;#8217;ve read this book and I still put things off.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Crush It, Gary Vaynerchuk&lt;/b&gt; - if you can get past Vaynerchuk&amp;#8217;s seeming self-obsession, this is a very good read on the social media world and the opportunities out there.  Get passionate about something and then write about it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;700 Sundays, Billy Crystal&lt;/b&gt; - a lighter choice.  A nice, easy read reflecting on family and the simpler things.  Entertaining.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;His post brought to light that we don&amp;#8217;t pat our franchisees on the back enough.  Was 2009 tough?  Absolutely.  We got through here in Australia less damaged than our colleagues in other countries, but it was still a tough year.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;SIGNARAMA total volume will end about 1.5% behind last year, a pretty good effort considering.  EmbroidMe will have grown about 7%, a super effort from our guys.  If that&amp;#8217;s a recessionary year, then the results from the good ones coming up will be frightening!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I would like to personally congratulate all of you on surviving and in some cases thriving, over the past 12 months.  I&amp;#8217;ve just returned from our annual UFG Year End Meetings in Florida, where the Support Team were publicly praised for the performance of our stores.  Like anyone with an ego I&amp;#8217;d like to take the credit, but it is all down to you guys.  Once again this year, you have made us look good.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As a Corporate office we quite often cajole, we criticise, we kick you in the pants when you don&amp;#8217;t do things the way we&amp;#8217;d like you to do them.  But every now and then we need to step back and praise for you having taken the step of controlling your own destiny.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Small business ain&amp;#8217;t easy - the daily pressures of staff management, conflicting ego&amp;#8217;s, troublesome customers, unreliable suppliers, deadlines, payroll, accounts receivables and 1,000 other things.  It&amp;#8217;s an unforgiving life, but one that can reap great rewards if done smartly.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As your Franchise Support Team, we here in Australia want to try to do as much as we can to give you the best possible chance of success.  We get things wrong more often than we&amp;#8217;d like to admit and so that&amp;#8217;s where we are relying on you, our constituency, to help us improve.  We&amp;#8217;re about to embark on our Strategic Planning and Goal Setting for 2010 and your input is valuable.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So as we put 2009 behind us and start with a clean slate, a new year, a &amp;#8220;Decade for Success,&amp;#8221; let me leave you with this thought for 2010:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Does direct mail still have a viable place in the digital age?  Are there alternatives to our durect mail campaigns that you think we should implement.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Put it this way: if you were about to open your SIGNARAMA or EmbroidMe store from scratch all over again, what marketing campaign would you have started with?&lt;/p&gt;
